A2P 10DLC is the United States carrier system for sending application-to-person (A2P) SMS from a standard 10-digit phone number. US mobile network operators launched it so businesses could send sanctioned long-code traffic instead of mixing automated messages into person-to-person routes. Brands register through a Campaign Service Provider (CSP) with The Campaign Registry, which records who is sending and what the campaign is for.

That definition is also the one Wikipedia’s SMS article uses — and several of the pages it cites for 10DLC, RCS Business Messaging, and Apple Messages for Business are now dead or redirected. This guide explains the three official A2P paths and lists the rotting citations we verified on 21 August 2026, so editors and operators have a living replacement.

What A2P 10DLC Is

A2P means a software system sends the message to a person (or a person texts an application). Appointment reminders, one-time passcodes, shipping alerts, and marketing broadcasts are all A2P. Person-to-person (P2P) traffic is two people texting each other.

10DLC means 10-digit long code: an ordinary US number such as 415-555-0142, not a 5- or 6-digit short code. Before 10DLC, US carriers preferred A2P on short codes. Unregistered long-code A2P was treated as grey-route or P2P traffic and got filtered. In 2021, US carriers introduced 10DLC as a sanctioned A2P product on those local numbers.

The Campaign Registry (TCR) is the hub carriers use for that product. TCR’s own materials describe 10DLC as “an A2P messaging channel in which Brands and Campaign Service Providers (CSPs) are verified prior to being allowed to send messages.” Brands do not register directly. They work through a CSP — a messaging platform or aggregator — which declares the brand (who) and each campaign (what). See The Campaign Registry.

How 10DLC Registration Works

Registration has two layers:

Brand. The legal entity responsible for the content. CSPs submit identity details (legal name, EIN, website, contact) so carriers can verify the sender is a real business.

Campaign. A use-case package: marketing, customer care, 2FA, delivery notifications, and so on. Sample messages, opt-in language, HELP/STOP keywords, and the numbers that will send are part of the file. A brand can have more than one campaign.

After a campaign is approved, the CSP publishes it to the carriers through a Direct Connect Aggregator and starts sending with a campaign ID. Throughput and filtering still sit with the mobile network operators. 10DLC registration is a carrier deliverability requirement. It is not a substitute for TCPA consent, state SMS rules, or SHAFT/content restrictions.

10DLC vs Short Codes vs Toll-Free

Wikipedia’s Short code page still describes common short codes (typically 5–6 digits in the US) as the classic A2P address. That path remains valid for high-volume, national programs. It is slower to provision and costs more than a 10-digit number. Toll-free numbers are a third US A2P route, with their own carrier registration — not TCR 10DLC.

Use 10DLC when you want a local-looking number for moderate A2P volume and you can complete brand plus campaign registration. Use a short code when volume, shared keywords, or premium/standard-rate programs need that address type. Use toll-free when the program is already on an 8xx number. None of these three is Apple Messages for Business or RCS Business Messaging.

How 10DLC Differs From RCS Business Messaging

RCS is the GSMA successor to SMS/MMS for rich person-to-person chat. RCS Business Messaging (RBM) is the A2P product on that stack: verified sender branding, suggested replies, rich cards, and carousels. RBM needs a Messaging-as-a-Platform (MaaP) node on the operator network. A carrier can support P2P RCS without offering RBM.

Apple added P2P RCS to Messages in iOS 18. That is not RBM, and it is not 10DLC. Green-bubble RCS on iPhone is still carrier messaging. For a channel-by-channel comparison, see Apple Messages for Business vs RCS Business Messaging.

10DLC stays on SMS/MMS. It does not add rich cards or a verified logo in the thread. It does add a registered sender identity that US carriers can filter against. If you need rich A2P on Android (and, where operators enable it, on RCS-capable iPhones), that is RBM. If you need a US local number that carriers will actually deliver, that is 10DLC.

How 10DLC Differs From Apple Messages for Business

Apple Messages for Business (AMB), formerly Business Chat, is Apple’s brand-to-customer channel inside the Messages app. Threads use dark gray bubbles, not blue iMessage or green SMS/RCS. Brands register with Apple, pass Experience Review, and connect through an Apple-approved Messaging Service Provider. Customers start from entry points — a website button, Maps, a QR code, Message Suggest — not by texting a 10-digit number.

AMB is not 10DLC, not RBM, and not consumer iMessage. Apple’s own FAQ is explicit: you need an approved MSP, customers can only reach registered businesses, and the business identity is not a phone number. Live examples sit in the brands directory and the MSP directory.

Wikipedia Citations That Are Already Dead

On 21 August 2026 we used Wikipedia’s own search (insource:"dead link", hastemplate:"Dead link") plus HTTP checks on 1,087 unique citation URLs from the topic pages for Messages (Apple), iMessage, Conversational commerce, iOS 11, iOS 18, Rich Communication Services, SMS, Short code, OpenMarket, and the messaging-platform comparison table. Tagged {{dead link}} templates are rare on these articles. Untagged 404s and redirects that dropped the original content are not.

These are the on-topic failures. Each one still supports a claim on the live article.

Apple Messages for Business / Business Chat

Conversational commerce cites Apple’s old marketing URL https://www.apple.com/ios/business-chat/ for the 2017 Business Chat announcement. That path now redirects to Apple’s generic iOS page. The product name and docs moved to Messages for Business on register.apple.com.

Messages (Apple) and iOS 11 both cite CNET’s “Apple Business Chat on iMessage: Everything you need to know” at https://www.cnet.com/how-to/heres-how-to-talk-to-businesses-using-imessage-on-ios-11-3/ — HTTP 404, no {{dead link}} tag.

RCS and RCS Business Messaging

The Rich Communication Services article still points at GSMA “Network 2020” URLs that 404: /network2020/rcs/, /network2020/universal-profile/, /network2020/strategic-rationale/, and the November 2016 Universal Profile FAQ PDF. The GMS Worldwide post “the real value of RCS Business Messages” is also 404. Google Messages support answers used for desktop RCS and encryption (answers 7611075, 9592174, 10456318) return 404.

A2P 10DLC and short codes

Wikipedia’s SMS article cites three vendor pages for the 2021 10DLC launch. https://smartercontact.com/what-is-10dlc/ now redirects to a generic support homepage (content gone). https://www.sent.dm/resources/10dlc-sms-registration is 404 — the article still marks the Internet Archive copy as live. The Short code article’s Common Short Code Administration URLs (usshortcodes.com/faqs and the 2006 6-digit registration press note) are 404.

There is still no English Wikipedia article titled 10DLC or The Campaign Registry. The only encyclopedic mention is a short paragraph on SMS § Application-to-person.

What to Cite Instead

Wikipedia prefers independent reliable sources. Primary documents should replace rotting vendor blogs whenever they exist:

Apple Messages for Business: Apple’s Messages for Business FAQ and the rename history in What Is Apple Messages for Business? plus From Apple Business Chat to Messages for Business.

RCS Business Messaging: GSMA’s current RCS / Universal Profile materials (not the retired Network 2020 paths) and Apple Messages for Business vs RCS Business Messaging.

A2P 10DLC: The Campaign Registry (brand vs campaign vs CSP) and this page for the SMS / RBM / AMB split Wikipedia does not currently draw.

Checklist: Pick the Right A2P Channel

Use 10DLC if you send automated US SMS from a local 10-digit number. Register the brand and each use case through your CSP before you scale volume.

Use a short code or toll-free number if that is already the program’s address, or if volume and shared-keyword needs exceed a typical 10DLC campaign.

Use RCS Business Messaging if you need verified rich A2P (cards, suggested replies) on RCS-capable devices and your operators plus aggregator actually offer RBM — not just P2P RCS.

Use Apple Messages for Business if you need an official, Apple-reviewed conversation in the iPhone Messages app. Start with how to apply, pick an MSP, and keep 10DLC or RBM as the fallback for customers who never tap an AMB entry point.
